Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra on Thursday took to microblogging site X to request authorities, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, to resolve the visa issue of Kishor Jena and help the athlete participate in the Budapest World Athletics Championships 2023. After that, Jenna finally got his visa from the Hungarian Embassy. The top athletics competition will start in Hungary from 19 to 27 August.

A promising javelin thrower, Jena's current rank is world No. 33. His personal best throw was 84.38m at the 101st Sri Lankan Championships in Sri Lanka on 28 July, which helped him win the gold medal.

India has announced a 28-member strong squad for the World Athletics Championships 2023. The squad will be led by Olympic gold medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. Neeraj became the country's 19-year-old first medalist at the championships with a silver in the men's javelin throw. Moreover, long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, hurdler Jyothi Yarraji and steeplechaser Avinash Sable will also be in action at the championships.

However, shotput player Tajinderpal Singh Toor had to withdraw from the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok last month due to a groin injury. He threw 20.23m to clinch the gold medal, but was injured in the end. This will be the second consecutive World Championships that Tajinder will miss due to injury. He had earlier pulled out of the 2022 Championships in Eugene due to a groin injury. Tejaswin Shankar will also not participate in the World Athletics Championships 2023. He will focus on the Asian Games 2023, in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8.
