Wrist spinner Varun Chakravarthy has emerged as an outside chance to make it into India's squad for the ODIs against England and the Champions Trophy.

India will return to international cricket on January 22 in a series of five T20 Internationals and three ODIs against England in Kolkata. After this it will go to Dubai for the Champions Trophy campaign. Pakistan will host the remaining half of the matches of the tournament.

Squad to announce on Sunday

The senior men's selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, will meet on Saturday to select the teams for the previously mentioned tasks, especially as the last date to announce the final squad for the Champions Trophy is Sunday.

Chakaravarthy took 18 wickets in VHT 2024-25

Sources said that Chakaravarthy's chances of being selected for India in ODIs, apart from being assured of a place in the T20 team, come at a time when he has taken 18 wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and is the leading wicket-taker.

Chakaravarthy, who performed brilliantly in India's T20 series wins against Bangladesh and South Africa, took 5 wickets for 52 runs for Tamil Nadu in the pre-quarterfinal match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, although it did not help them win over Rajasthan at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

Kuldeep Yadav is one of the strong candidates

Kuldeep Yadav is yet to return to competitive matches due to his recovery from hernia surgery but his fitness has been an issue for a while. If he is to get the selectors' nod for the Champions Trophy, he would need to first prove his fitness for England ODIs, which could be tricky.

In such a situation, Varun has a chance to make a place in India's ODI team for the England series and Champions Trophy, because the selectors are going to discuss about the spin department.

India has won the Champions Trophy twice, and is one of the most successful teams in the eight-team tournament along with Australia.
