Manchester United sets unfortunate Premier League record for goals conceded from set-pieces

Manchester United has set an unfortunate Premier League record for conceding the most goals from set-pieces in a calendar year during their upsetting 0-3 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford today. 

As per Opta, The Red Devils have conceded 17 goals from set-pieces in 2024 excluding penalties; which is the most conceded by United in the Premier League to date.

An unsettling record

Manchester United has faced a shocking 0-3 defeat against AFC Bournemouth tonight. This is United's third defeat in the Premier League since Ruben Amorim took over the hot-seat at Old Trafford. Dean Huijsen, Justin Kluivert, and Antoine Semenyo scored to hand the Cherries a famous win. 

However, Manchester United conceded their 17th goal from set-pieces in 2024 in the 29th minute of the game. Dean Huijsen, the 19-year-old Dutch defender headed the ball home following a beautiful free-kick delivered by Ryan Christie. 

Manchester United has dropped to the 13th position of the leaderboard, having garnered 22 points in 17 games so far.

The hardships at United have started to grapple Ruben Amorim, who has already conceded 17 goals in 9 matches in charge across all competitions. The Portuguese manager has addressed the issue of crumbling against set-pieces in the post-match interview:

In this context, it's hard to push for two or three wins. We're trying. But this game was hard on us. Without any situation, we suffered again at set-pieces

The January transfer window is approaching, and Manchester United will have a chance to acquire reinforcements per Amorim's demands. It will be interesting to see how Amorim revamps the existing squad to avoid such crucial defeats and resolve the ongoing concerns.
