West Ham have sacked their head coach Julen Lopetegui after Manchester City thrashed them with a 4-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on January 4th, 2025. After the poor performance at Etihad, the West Ham board decided to sack former Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui. The West Ham board is set to appoint former Chelsea FC manager Graham Potter.
A short Note about Julen Lopetegui:
Julen Lopetegui is a former manager of Real Madrid and the Spanish national team. He was signed as Real Madrid'shead coach in 2018, succeeding Zinedine Zidane. He also took over the Spanish national team in 2016.
The Spanish manager arrived in London with a reputation that preceded him. Unfortunately, he struggled to live up to the high expectations of West Ham fans, leaving the club's dream unfulfilled.
What was the actual reason behind sacking Lopetegui:
West Ham has fired the boss after two distressing defeats against Liverpool and Manchester City. Hammers conceded 9 goals in their last two matches against these two Premier League heavyweights. The poor performances of the Club finally grabbed the attention of the West Ham board.
Graham Potter failed to bring his magics from Brighton to Chelsea. In April 2023, the Chelsea board made the decision to sack him, marking the end of his tenure at the club. The Hammers board trusted him by appointing them as their new Head Coach.
West Ham board's reaction after sacking the current Head Coach:
In a recent report via The Guardian, the West Ham board has already found a better replacement than Lopetegui. The former Chelsea manager is ready to take over the West Ham team.
The West Ham board issued an official statement via their website and social media, the statement read:
"West Ham United can confirm that Head Coach Julen Lopetegui has left the club today. The first half of the 2024/25 season has not aligned with the club's ambitions and the club has therefore taken action in line with its objectives. The board would like to thank Julen and his coaching staff for their hard work during their time with the Hammers and wish them every success for the future. The process of appointing a replacement is underway. The Club will be making no further comment at this time."
The Hammers have started their 2024/25 season in a mess. However, the current manager of the Hammers spent 130 million euros in the summer transfer window. After splashing a huge amount of money in the transfer market, they only managed to win 6 games in 20 matches. They are currently in the 14th position in the league table, somehow keeping themself out of the relegation zone.
