Ethiopian long distance runner Yalemzerf Yehualaw breaks the 10km World record with 29:14 in Castellon. The World Athletics label road race was held in the Spanish Costal City on Sunday.
Yalemzerf is already a half-marathon bronze medalist. Meanwhile, by breaking the world record she surpassed Joyciline Jepkosgei's ratified record of 29:43. A ratified record means the record has been singed or authorized by World Athletics.
If this record gets ratified, Yalemzerf will also go past Bahrain's Kalkidan Gezahegne's unratified record of 29:38 set last year.
With this record, Yalemzerf Yehualaw is now the first woman to run a 10 km under 29:30 and 29:20 on the roads. Interestingly, Yalemzerf was running alongside men on the road. The 22-year old runner completed her 5 km in just 14:28. After that, she only took 14:46 to cover her last 5 km.
Astonishingly, Yalemzerf's first 5km is onw the second fastest timing in that distance by any woman.
There are only two woman who have run a faster 10 km. However, all of those two records were set on track. Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey (29:01:03) and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands (29:06.82) are those two woman to have the fastest 10km timing on track.
This record will stay after it gets ratifies by the World Athletics Organization.
