Town Club, a side that counts Swami Vivekananda among its most distinguished alumni, claimed their first-ever Cricket Association of Bengal 1st Division Championship through a grinding victory against a Mohun Bagan side that had ten first-class players in their lineup. Although the match ended in a draw, Town Club clinched the title by virtue of a first-innings lead.

It was the culmination of a campaign built on youth, resilience, and a refusal to be intimidated. Subham Sarkar's side had beaten Mohun Bagan in their very first league encounter of the season. They had beaten Bhawanipore Club in the semis, last year's joint champions, along the way. And in the final itself, they faced a Mohun Bagan XI that had some superstars of the game, including Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran and veteran Anustup Majumdar.

None of it was enough to stop Town Club.

Sachin Yadav and Avilin Paul built the platform for Town Club

Town Club won the toss and elected to bat, and it was a decision that shaped the entire match.

The top order wobbled immediately. Opener Ankur Paul fell for a first-ball duck in the first innings to Ravi Kumar, with the scorecard reading 9 for 1 inside three overs. Ankit Shukla followed for four, and wicketkeeper Suprodip Debnath perished for 25 shortly after, leaving Town Club 30 for 4 inside ten overs.

What followed was a masterclass in middle-order character. Avilin Ghosh dug in for 106 off 214 balls, while Sachin Yadav complemented him with 114 off 224. They both built a 210-run fifth-wicket stand that shifted the match's centre of gravity entirely.

Captain Sarkar came in and finished unbeaten on 66 off 186 as Town Club pressed past 400. Rahul Prasad chipped in with a composed 54 as well.

Ravi Kumar was the star of the show for Mohun Bagan with 6 for 90.

Town Club were eventually dismissed for 403 in 139.3 overs, a total that gave their bowlers something real to work with.

Deepansh Chauhan's five-wicket haul gave them the lead

Deepansh Chauhan was the man who made it count with the ball. The right-arm fast bowler finished with 5 for 72 in 27.5 overs to rattle the star-studded Mohun Bagan batting lineup.

He set the tone for the entire bowling lineup by dismissing Abhishek Kumar Raman, who was coming off a scintillating 187. He then ran through the Mohun Bagan tail, including Parmar Jayveersinh Kanaksinh, Ravi Kumar, and Rajkumar Pal.

Mohun Bagan's response was disciplined but fell short.

Vivek Singh top-scored with 75 off 122, showing the kind of fluency that had earned him a place in the state setup. Shakir Habib Gandhi contributed 51, and Pradipta Pramanik batted through for an unbeaten 35 at the end. But Mohun Bagan were bowled out for 353 in 128.5 overs, surrendering the crucial 50-run lead.

Ankur's ton took the game further away for Town

Ankur Paul, having failed with the bat in the first innings, came back to score 135 off 187 balls in the second inning, while Aishik Patel contributed 89 off 218.

Aamir Gani returned 4 for 88 for Mohun Bagan in the second innings, but by that point the first-innings lead was already secured, and the title decided.

The club that Swami Vivekananda once represented, a man whose philosophy centred on mental strength and the refusal to accept limitation, finally has a trophy to its name. It took 130 years. On the evidence of this team, it will not take another 130 for the next one.

"It feels special. None had believed in us. After beating Mohun Bagan in the first match of the league, we had the belief that we could beat anyone," captain Subham Sarkar told Sportz Point after the win.

"From the start of the season, we always talked about being champions, and with everyone's effort, we were able to script history," he concluded.
