India will be hosting the the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad in July-August 2022. The Tamil Nadu chief minister announced it on his Twitter handle.

India will be hosting the the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad in July-August 2022. The Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin announced the news on his Twitter handle on Tuesday night.

Moscow, Russia was supposed to host the 44th Chess Olympiad. But after Russia invaded Ukraine, they decided to change the host country. Chennai, India will be hosting the event now and this is going to be the second major global event in Chess in India after the 2013 World Championship match.

M K Stalin tweeted, "Delighted that the Chess Capital of India is set to host the 44th Chess Olympiad! A proud moment for Tamil Nadu! Chennai warmly welcomes all the Kings and Queens from around the world!
#ChessOlympiad2022"

The All-India Chess Federation posted on Twtter, "It's official now....India will host the 44th World Chess Olympiad 2022 at Chennai!" 

Viswanathan Anand is ecstatic with the news. He said, "As a World champion from my country, being a host to one of the top chess events in the chess calendar is a sense of personal pride. India has hosted many world-class events, and by hosting the Olympiad, we would have hosted all the important chess events in our country. This will add to our stature as one of the foremost countries in chess talent and chess organization."
