In a tactical match that seemed destined for a draw, Kai Havertz emerged as the hero, scoring a stunning injury-time winner to give Arsenal a crucial 1-0 advantage in the UEFA Champions League 2026 quarter-final first leg against Sporting CP on Tuesday at Estádio José Alvalade.
The first 15 minutes lived up to the hype

Sporting CP, the Portuguese champions, entered the match on a formidable 16-match home winning streak. The opening 15 minutes of the match lived up to the hype as both sides struck the woodwork.
Sporting nearly drew first blood when Maxi Araujo’s powerful drive was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by David Raya. At the other end, Noni Madueke almost caught Rui Silva off guard when his inswinging corner clipped the frame of the goal.
Beyond that crazy start, clear-cut chances were a rarity in the first half.
Returning to his former home, Viktor Gyokeres was largely resisted by a crowded Sporting defence, while Martin Odegaard saw a rebound fly wide after a dangerous free kick.
Both teams looked stong at the back
The second half also saw a similar pattern of defensive discipline from both sides. Arsenal thought they had finally broken the deadlock midway through the period when Martin Zubimendi fired a superb first-time strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
However, the celebrations were cut short by a VAR review, which ruled the goal out for an offside against Gyokeres in the build-up to that goal.
Havertz scored the decisive goal

As the match moved toward a draw, Mikel Arteta introduced Gabriel Martinelli and Max Dowman to inject fresh energy. The gamble paid off as late as the 92nd minute of the match.
Martinelli found a pocket of space and played a perfectly weighted pass to Kai Havertz, who burst through the middle of the box. The German international striker kept his cool, placing the ball past Silva to silence the home crowd.
The victory now hands Arsenal a vital lead as they head back to the Emirates Stadium next Wednesday for the second leg.
