Former India forward Shyam Thapa was on Thursday chosen as the "Mohun Bagan Ratna", the club's highest honor, which he would receive at its annual celebration day ceremony on July 29.

On Thursday, 'Mohun Bagan Athletic Club' announced that they will celebrate Mohun Bagan Day (July 29) on their club premises this year. The ceremony was held virtually the last two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The auspicious day will be celebrated inside the club premises on July 29 with an exhibition match of ex-players. Meanwhile, after the game, there will be a cultural program before the award ceremony.

Firstly, Singer Pousali Banerjee will perform while Bangla Band 'Chandrabindoo' will also perform after the conclusion of the award ceremony.

Famous for his bicycle kick and back volleys, Thapa made his name for East Bengal in the mid-1960s and early 70s before arch-rivals roped him in 1977 for a record sum of Rs 50,000.

Thapa was the chairman of the All India Football Federation's technical committee before it was disbanded and CoA took over.

The Mohun Bagan working committee picked talented youngster Kiyan Nassiri as the 'Best Forward', while Liston Colaco was adjudged the Best Footballer.

Former goalkeeper Balai Dey will be conferred with the Lifetime Achievement, the club stated.
