The first Ranji Trophy fixtures took place in the 1934–35 season. Mumbai are the most successful state in Ranji's history, winning 41 titles, including 15 consecutive trophies between 1958 and 1973. Madhya Pradesh made their debut in 1941 and won five titles in the tournament's history. They won the first Ranji title in 1945–46, defeating Baroda in the finals. After that, MP also won in 1947-48, 1950-51, 1951-53, and 2021-22.

Baroda are the joint-fourth successful team in the history of the Ranji Trophy. They made their first-class debut in 1937 and won their maiden title in 1942–43. Baroda then went on to win in 1945–47, 1949–50, 1957–58, and 2000–2001.

Delhi Cricket Team made their first-class debut in 1934. From Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi to Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, this team has produced some big players for Team India. Delhi won their maiden Ranji title in 1978–79 and their most recent win came in the 2007–08 edition. Delhi have won seven Ranji Trophy titles and finished eight times as runners-up.
