Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao both failed to break the deadlock in the first 85 minutes of the match. However, the late substitution of Berenguer proved to be crucial for the Los Leones.

Berenguer's goal in the 89th minute secured a surprise 1-0 victory in the quarter-finals. As Marcelino's side took down Barcelona with another unexpected result during their RO16 clash. Even though Real Madrid had the game in control; they still failed to contain the brilliant striker from the substitute Alex Berenguer. Now Athletic Bilbao has taken down both Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively to move forward into the Semis of the Copa Del Rey.

Real Madrid showed a commendable first half as they held off the attacking force of Bilbao. In the second half both the teams showed their composure and were taking their chances, yet nobody got a breakthrough. However, just at the final minutes of the 90 minutes, Casemiro's poor clearance attempt landed onto the feet of Mikel Vesga who beautifully laid off the ball to Alex Berenguer; Who cut inside Nacho leaving him scrambled and found the far corner of the post beating Courtois.
