Spain lifted the European Championship trophy in 1964, 2008, and 2012. They reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020, losing to the eventual winners Italy on penalties. Spain will enter this match in strong form, having won their two June friendlies, beating Andorra 5-0 and Northern Ireland 5-1. They drew with Brazil at the end of March. Spain have won six of their 10 matches against Croatia.

Mikel Merino and Dani Olmo are prime candidates to start, but Fabian Ruiz and Nico Williams will most likely feature from the start due to their brilliant forms. Pedri and Rodri are untouchable in the midfield so they will definitely start. Aymeric Laporte missed training on Thursday with a muscular issue, so Nacho will start in the middle at the defense.

Lamine Yamal is set to become the youngest player to play at the European Championship. The 16-year-old is in line to start on the right for La Roja. Dani Carvajal will also start, while the left-back position in the team is expected to be awarded to Alex Grimaldo who had a terrific season with Leverkusen.

    Croatia:

Croatia's last win against Spain came in the UEFA Nations League 2018. These two sides met in the last-16 stage of Euro 2020, with Spain winning 5-3 after extra-time. Croatia's recent World Cup record is impressive, finishing as the runners-up in 2018, before claiming third at the 2022 competition in Qatar. However, the national side have been knocked out in the round of 16 in their last two European Championship appearances.

Croatia will enter this match full of confidence, having been victorious in their last six games in all competitions, including a big 2-1 victory over Portugal in a friendly. Zlatko Dalic's side have only lost two of their last 10 matches in all competitions and have scored nine times in their previous three games.

Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic, and Marcelo Brozovic are set to feature in the midfield. Lovro Majer is also likely to be included in the starting side, with Kramaric and Ante Budimir most likely joining him in the final third. Ivan Perisic is still not fully fit after a serious knee injury so he will be on the bench. Marin Pongracic and Josip Sutalo will form a pair with Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol and Leverkusen's Josip Stanisic in the defense.
