Spain vs Germany: Match Preview:

Spain can send shudders around the rest of the World Cup competition if they build on their 7-0 win over Costa Rica and beat Germany.

Luis Enrique's side were as impressive as Costa Rica were poor in their opening Group E match, running riot with seven goals en route to the country's record World Cup win, Ferran Torres netting a brace with Dani Olmo, Gavi, Marco Asensio, Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata all chipping in with goals.

Germany began the tournament in contrasting fashion, falling to an embarassing 2-1 defeat to Japan – despite having led through Ilkay Gundogan's penalty – and are now facing a second group stage exit in successive World Cups.

This game has been billed as the highlight of the whole group stage so far, and there's plenty riding on it for both teams.

Team News:

Spain:

A bout of flu had peppered the Spanish squad ahead of their stroll against Costa Rica. Both Alvaro Morata and Dani Carvajal missed training due to illness but the pair made it onto the bench, with Morata notching Spain's seventh of the afternoon as a substitute.

Luis Enrique made all five of his allotted changes with more than 20 minutes left to play, resting half of his outfield starters perhaps with Sunday in mind – though trying to second-guess Enrique is a thankless task.

Germany:

Leroy Sane was the only member of Hansi Flick's squad that didn't make the bench against Japan while he nursed a knee injury. The Bayern Munich wide man has been limited to individual training and his involvement this weekend is mired in uncertainty.

Spain vs Germany: Head to Head:

Germany have a slight edge over Spain and have won nine out of the 25 matches played between the two teams, as opposed to Spain's eight victories. Spain have played against Germany on four occasions in the World Cup.

— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) November 24, 2022

Their previous meeting in the competition in 2010 saw Spain secure a 1-0 semi-final victory and eventually lift the trophy.

Germany have won only one of their last seven matches against Spain in all competitions, with their previous victory against La Furia Roja coming by a 1-0 scoreline in 2014.
