The Durand Cup 2024 Group stage match between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant has been cancelled due to potential security issues. It was scheduled to play on August 18, at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. The reason for this sudden cancelation is the rape and murder of Dr. Moumita Debnath at RG Kar Medical College. The city is witnessing protests all around right now. The city Police said that providing extra security for the Derby will be a big challenge at this moment.

The Outcome of this cancelation

The tournament might be shifted to Jamshedpur. “There are multiple options that the tournament committee is looking at. Jamshedpur is an option but there might be logistical issues. But nothing is confirmed at the moment and we are looking for the best solution,” a source told.

The official confirmation is yet to come, but both teams will share points. The cost of tickets will be fully refunded. Mohun Bagan has already qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament. For the final eight, six group-toppers and two best second-placed teams will fill the spot.

The Red-and-Gold Brigade is currently sitting second on the list of second-placed teams, but Goa will play Shillong Lajong at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong today. They might surpass East Bengal to secure their spot in the knockouts.
